While I was a member of the armed forces during the war, a dear aunt sent me a vest pocket edition of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy; but as my thought was not yet ready to accept this glorious truth which frees mankind from all the ills to which the flesh is heir, I put it away unread, to turn to it three years later when adrift and in desperate need.
In the year 1920, after years spent in seeking material pleasures, I was instantaneously healed of the tobacco habit, in which I had indulged for over fifteen years, simply by reading this textbook. This healing seemed so miraculous to me at the time that I began a diligent study of Christian Science, with the result that other false appetites were dropped by the wayside one by one.
The problem of supply was seemingly a very difficult one up to the time I began the study of Christian Science. I had been a failure in business, having held many positions, only to lose them all. After I had worked on this problem for several years without any apparent progress, what the Way-shower said was pointed out to me: "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." After pondering this statement for some time I realized that I had been looking for the outward manifestation of supply before faulty thinking had been changed. It was lovingly pointed out to me that wrong thought must be effaced before the problem could be solved. Then began a period of self-examination; and I discovered that I was harboring thoughts of criticism, self-condemnation, quick temper, and many other unlovely thoughts. I set about correcting these wrong thoughts, and then outward conditions began to improve, until now, although I am still seeking to correct wrong beliefs, considerable progress has been made.
