"Progress is the law of God"

"Progress is the law of God." This dynamic statement may be read on page 233 of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy; and we can rejoice to know that we are under this law. Once we glimpse even a very little of divine Principle, of Life, Truth, and Love, we find ourselves in the line of spiritual progress, where there is no stopping or turning back—where we must advance.

In this advance we are not at the mercy of ourselves or of others. What a hopeless task it would be if we were! What a rough way the so-called human mind would provide for itself! But as we accept the truth of our kinship with the loving Father-Mother God, we find ourselves under His law. Under this law we need not plot or plan, for this fostering Principle is ever operative. It but remains for us to lay aside self-will, and with grateful humility become spiritually aware of its operation. We shall then find ourselves on the way.

There are many helpful signposts to guide us; and the earnestness of right motives will cause us to pause and seek direction. Paul reminds us that "love is the fulfilling of the law." We know, then, the first step to take. Love—more love must be manifested! Do we falter at this? Does the mortal belief of temperament and disposition whisper: Yes, but I am reticent; I feel loving, but I cannot show the love I feel; or, How can I love those who do not measure up to the ideal? or, There is a hardness in me; I am not capable of loving supremely? Must we find ourselves so soon thwarted in the way? No! We need but recall that "progress is the law of God," that "love is the fulfilling of the law," and that, as we read further from our textbook (p. 224), "No power can withstand divine Love." The barrier is down We grasp the weapon with which to remove the obstacles raised by erroneous belief. And thus we proceed, walking in the law. Progress is imperative. True consciousness climbs ever upward, upward, rescued each time that mortal mind would lure it to some subtly veiled plateau. Mrs. Eddy tells us that "broken law brings penalty in order to compel this progress" (ibid., p. 11). An experience of a beginner in Christian Science will illustrate the point.
