A clergyman tries to make clear in the Gazette the reason why he believes Christian Science to be a misleading creed and a false prophet. He accuses Mrs. Eddy of tampering with a passage in the epistle to the Romans, declaring that she inserted the word "seeming" before "resurrection"—"by the (seeming) resurrection from the dead." I shall be glad if you will allow me space to state that nowhere in any of her writings does Mrs. Eddy speak of the "seeming" resurrection of Christ Jesus; neither does she say anything which could possibly be construed to mean such a thing. It is probable, however, that this critic has quoted from some book or pamphlet in circulation which tampers with the statements in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, giving an erroneous view of her book and spreading broadcast misconception of Christian Science. The resurrection of Christ Jesus is understood in Christian Science to be, next to his ascension, the sublimest event of his career. Regarding his victory over the grave, Mrs. Eddy writes on page 45 of Science and Health: "Jesus' deed was for the enlightenment of men and for the salvation of the whole world from sin, sickness, and death. Paul writes: 'For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the [seeming] death of His Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.' Three days after his bodily burial he talked with his disciples. The persecutors had failed to hide immortal Truth and Love in a sepulchre."

In reply to the clergyman's assertion that the "whole philosophy of Christian Science is so essentially different from, and contradictory to, the philosophy of the Bible," I would say that through Science and Health, a book which is in the nature of a commentary on the Scriptures, a light has been thrown on the Bible such as has not been known since the early Christian centuries. To-day Christian Scientists are beholding the effect of Jesus' sacred promise to humanity, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free;" and once more the great verity of being is being demonstrated in the healing of sin and disease.
