I first heard of Christian Science in 1915, when a friend lent me the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Out of curiosity I read part of the book; but, needless to say, with such a motive I found it almost incomprehensible and rather distasteful. In January, 1918, I attended a lecture on Christian Science, again out of curiosity, and with exactly the same result. During these years, however, I had heard of cases of healing from friends who, I knew, were truthful people; so, when my brother was pronounced hopelessly ill, after being gassed in July, 1918, I wired him to consult a Christian Science practitioner. He consented, and asked me to read the textbook with him. Then, turning to this wonderful teaching in humility, actuated not by curiosity but by love for my brother, I found the truth which is making me free "from the law of sin and death."
Since then, every discordant condition has yielded quickly, in my experience, to Christian Science. Water on the knee was healed in one treatment; so was almost complete loss of voice; and ear trouble vanished as I worked as we are taught to do in Christian Science. In August, 1922, I went for a holiday to northern Italy, and was there attacked by dysentery, from which I had suffered in India many years before. I was far from any practitioner, and I determined to do my own work. Having foolishly tried to ignore the illness for twenty-four hours, I appeared to be seriously ill; but after two hours alone with God, the Bible, and Science and Health, I found the trouble had completely disappeared.
For these and other healings I am very grateful; but even more for the freedom from care which my slight understanding of the allness of God had brought to me. I am also grateful for the Christian Science literature, for class instruction, for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, and for the pure thought and great courage of Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. Brought up in a Scottish manse, I used to sing the words of the one hundred and third psalm, as given in the Metrical Version, and believed that they were sometimes true:
