After the birth of a child, my health failed to return
After the birth of a child, my health failed to return. My condition was such that I could not walk a block or be on my feet without distress. We had the best physicians, who made various diagnoses, all demanding an operation. I was terribly afraid, and could not consent. It was finally decided that the spleen, having become enlarged and partly ossified, had dropped out of place, thus causing other displacements. While in this condition, in 1896, I first learned of Christian Science and went to St. Louis to investigate it. I had treatment for one week. Learning that absent treatment was quite as effectual as present, I returned home with my books and began to study.
Like many others, I thought so serious an organic difficulty could not be reached by Christian Science. I had treatments several times, but would become discouraged. My awakening to the truth of being, the allness of God and man as His offspring, came through studying the spiritual interpretation of Genesis, as given in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. When I understood God as Mind, divine Principle, which controls all harmoniously, my thought was led to an illumined understanding of the allness of God, Spirit, and His infinite manifestation. With this understanding I could but acknowledge that such omnipotence is the only power, and that no law of mortality could prevent perfect adjustment, so far even as my body was concerned. It followed that health and strength gradually returned, and the enlargement disappeared. Being able once more to walk for blocks, even miles, was a source of great pleasure to me. My healing was undoubtedly delayed by false theology. Two of Mrs. Eddy's hymns were largely instrumental in helping me to surrender human will.
I sometimes rejoice that my healing was not immediate. The years of thoughtful study, the many chastisements of Love, the stumbling and rising again on this journey from sense to Soul, have brought strength and taught useful lessons.
