A contributor's notes on the International Sunday school...

New Castle News

A contributor's notes on the International Sunday school lesson in your recent issue contains references to Christian Science which are erroneous, and indicate not only a lack of knowledge on the subject but also a rather strained effort to say something unfavorable upon it. Christian Science does not deny the personality of Christ Jesus, as alleged, but it distinguishes between the corporeal personality of Jesus and the Christ. In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 333), Mrs. Eddy states: "Christ is not a name so much as the divine title of Jesus. Christ expresses God's spiritual, eternal nature. The name is synonymous with Messiah, and alludes to the spirituality which is taught, illustrated, and demonstrated in the life of which Christ Jesus was the embodiment."

The contributor is mistaken in assuming that Christian Science is pantheistic. There is no other religion so absolutely free from pantheism. Mrs. Eddy rightly reasoned that since God, Spirit, is infinite, God could not be in anything material. She therefore defines the word "in" in the Glossary of Science and Health (p. 588) as "a term obsolete in Science if used with reference to Spirit or Deity." Instead of God being in anything material, all reality is and must be in God, a teaching which is the very opposite of the theory of pantheism. The universe of God's creating, Mrs. Eddy taught, is spiritual and reflects the divine nature, expressing God's will and law. "Christianity," writes Mrs. Eddy (Christian Science versus Pantheism, p. 8), "as taught and demonstrated in the first century by our great Master, virtually annulled the so-called laws of matter, idolatry, pantheism, and polytheism."
