It is with profound gratitude I wish to tell of my healing which took place in the fall of 1920. For several years I had suffered from an abdominal complaint, until finally I was obliged to undergo an operation. After the operation, however, I had the same and even worse pain, so that I was to have a still more serious operation. At the time of the first operation I had put myself in the hands of the physician confidently and without fear, but now I was overcome with an anxious fear, wondering if I should live through the operation and if I really should ever be well again. While I was in this condition I heard of Christian Science for the first time. A dear friend brought me some literature. At that time I was one who, in view of war, and because of painful personal experiences, had lost all faith in God,—not to mention a good God,—and who attributed everything to mere chance. When, however, the day for the operation was arranged, in my fear I was willing to try anything, so decided to ask for help in Christian Science. My friend took me to a Christian Science practitioner, who lovingly began treatment at once. The pain diminished, and when the day came that I was to go to the hospital, I went without fear; and the physician was quite surprised to find no need of an operation. The diseased formation had disappeared from my body: I was healed. A wonderful feeling of rapture came over me, and I was and still am indescribably happy, not only for my physical healing, but more because I have found my way back, with a quite new understanding, to our infinitely good Father.
In the summer of 1923 my mother was taken seriously ill. The physician, a well-known homeopath, diagnosed the trouble as a serious intestinal complaint, and was doubtful whether she would recover. He would try and see what he could do, he said. I asked my mother to seek help in Christian Science; and this she did. A kind practitioner, who had sometimes shown me the right way out of my difficulties, took an interest in my mother's case at once. After a short time there was a marked improvement in her condition. Gradually all the symptoms of a serious complaint disappeared, and within a few weeks she was healed.
I was and still am profoundly grateful for this new proof of protecting, omnipotent Love, and must continually acknowledge that we are secure if we honestly and humbly and with perfect confidence subordinate ourselves to spiritual laws, and if we, laying aside our selfishness, at every hour and in every place, remember that we must always do our duty loyally and joyously in harmony with these spiritual laws. Filled with gratitude, it is my desire to learn more and more of this old Christ-teaching, in order to be able torecognize God's true creation as He created it—perfect, pure, and free.
