A comparison of the book on Christian Science by Sir William Barrett,...

A comparison of the book on Christian Science by Sir William Barrett, with the review of it in the Transcript of August 25, shows that the reviewer has given prominence to the more unfavorable parts of the book. Although the author of the book accepted and repeated adverse assertions and opinions, he also adopted and reported favorable comments and observations, to which he added some of his own.

Thus, in the Introduction, the author adopted the following statement by an English clergyman (the Rev. Percy Dearmer): "Thousands of people have been undoubtedly healed [by Christian Science]; and what is of far greater importance, thousands of people have been converted in their souls and are now leading happy and good lives. You can go into many a home and find there an atmosphere of cheerful trust in God, of peace and gentleness, which is due to people having been converted by this teaching."

Relating his own observation, on page 106, Sir William Barrett reported the practical expression of Christianity by the disciples of Christian Science and continued as follows: "It is impossible for so beautiful an outcome of religious belief to exist without a solid foundation of truth."
