Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication for the Year Ended September 30, 1926
Russia.
It gives me great pleasure to submit my second annual report. During the past year the attitude of the Government towards religious questions in our land has remained the same as before. Though it is encouraging to note that the antireligious propaganda seems to be abating, the utmost materialism is still manifested in all planes of social life. All that has any relation to religion and metaphysics is ridiculed and quite ignored by the authorities, who only tolerate its remaining in the country. As the press is in the hands of the Government and the few private periodicals which are issued in Russia are under severe censure and are very one-sided in their themes, there do not at all appear in the papers articles discussing religious questions. As far as it has come to my notice, there has not appeared during the last year a single article or remark concerning Christian Science, which is still very little known in Russia. In spite of all, it must be said, however, that our Christian Science Society here does not experience much repression in its work; and we can be grateful for the evidences of the progress of our Cause.
There have been many witness to the work of Truth during the past year. A pastor of a Lutheran church here, being informed by a member of his family about Christian Science and of many cases of healing which took place in Leningrad, called on a practitioner and asked for treatment for a member of his parish, who was already said to be on his deathbed and to whom he had just administered the sacrament. The case appeared very discouraging, as the patient was suffering from consumption, and had been confined to his bed for four years. After several weeks of treatment the patient was quite restored to health and asked the pastor to return thanks for the recommendation of Christian Science. The pastor was greatly impressed by the demonstration, and one Sunday in church he gave thanks in prayer during the service for "the healing through the right kind of faith."
