Wilkes-Barre Times-Leader
Evidently the writer in a recent issue reffered to Christian Scientists when he stated that the hopes entertained by medical science of fighting a certain disease successfully in a new way, "will shock and disturb those who believe that there is no such thing as disease, and that all you need to do is to deny its reality." Kindly permit me to say, therefore, that it is rather late for any one, least of all Christian Scientists, to be shocked or disturbed because our medical friends are seeking new methods of healing along material lines. The history of medicine shows that such seeking is not an unusual occurrence! Christian Scientists frankly admit that in their teaching and practice, disease, though apparent to the material senses, is denied as having reality. If disease had reality, it could not be destroyed by any method. They realize, however, that it takes more than a mere superficial denial or "amiable theorizing" to overcome the false belief called disease. When Christ Jesus stated the scientific fact, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free," he meant vastly more than suggestive therapeutics, or even a candid belief in the unreality of evil.
Christian Science shows that it is utterly impossible for any one to understand the unreality of disease, until he has demonstrated, to some extent at least, the eternal nature and substance of Spirit—the only reality. Therefore, Mrs. Eddy, in answering her own question as found in "Unity of Good" (pp. 9, 10), "What is the cardinal point of the difference in my metaphysical system?" said: "This: that by knowing the unreality of disease, sin, and death, you demonstrate the allness of God. This difference wholly separates my system from all others. The reality of these so-called existences I deny, because they are not to be found in God, and this system is built on Him as the sole cause." In making this statement, Mrs. Eddy said only what has been proved true in thousands of instances, including the successful healing of the disease referred to, by Christian Science treatment.
