There appeared an unwarranted reference to Mrs. Eddy...

There appeared an unwarranted reference to Mrs. Eddy in your recent issue. Therefore, I request that you kindly publish the following statement made in defense of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. It seems quite unfair of a critic, after denouncing a medical theory advanced by a physician of his own school, that "wet feet and chilly winds" cause a certain disease, to brand this doctor's disagreement as being "like Mrs. Eddy's own stuff." In 1866 Mrs. Eddy recovered from an injury caused by accident, and pronounced by attending physicians as fatal. All other help having failed, this spiritually-minded woman turned unreservedly to God. Calling for her Bible, Mrs. Eddy opened it at Matthew 9:2. Telling of this experience in her book, "Miscellaneous Writings," she says (p. 24): "As I read, the healing Truth dawned upon my sense; and the result was that I rose, dressed myself, and ever after was in better health than I had before enjoyed. That short experience included a glimpse of the great fact that I have since tried to make plain to others, namely, Life in and of Spirit; this Life being the sole reality of existence."
After this healing Mrs. Eddy never deserted the spiritual facts revealed to her, through reason and revelation, that God is the only cause and creator, whose reflection is spiritual man and the universe. On the other hand, through her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy teaches that fear and carnal-mindedness (not wet feet and chilly winds) cause the suffering and sorrows of mankind, while the health, peace, and happiness enjoyed by thousands of men and women who are students of the Bible and Science and Health result from the constant endeavor of these lovers of good to be spiritually-minded.
