Importunate Prayer

"Ye shall know the truth, and the truth, shall make you free." This is perhaps one of the most cherished of the Master's sayings. And little wonder; for it is the promise of salvation or deliverance from evil of every kind. But do we always remember the condition which precedes this promise, expressed in the words, "If ye continue in my word"?

Jesus' "word" was the truth about God and man in His image and likeness which he taught; and "continue" means "persist; persevere." Taken in this sense, the quotation means: If you persevere or persist in realizing the truth about God and man in His image and likeness, you shall be made free from any and every false belief to the contrary. Indeed, all we can ever seem to need to be freed from is false belief concerning God and man.

By precept and example the Master taught the value of persistent or importunate prayer; and the light that Christian Science throws upon prayer enables one better to appreciate its teaching. In that wonderful chapter on Prayer in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy has written (p. 3), "His work is done, and we have only to avail ourselves of God's rule in order to receive His blessing, which enables us to work out our own salvation."
