International Journal of Ethics

[From an article by Louis Arnaud Reid, in the International Journal of Ethics, Chicago, Illinois]

The supreme Man of Christendom was the Man of Sorrows. On the other hand, as Jesus said, "I have meat to eat that ye know not of;" and it is a mistaken view to regard the unhappiness of the virtuous man altogether in an external way. He himself may have rather a different story to tell. His conflict with the world brings pain, but he has an inner joy which it is impossible to describe, a peace "which passeth all understanding."
