Readiness to Receive

It is one thing to ask for Christian Science treatment; it is another to be prepared to receive its benefits. One who is seeking the aid of Christian Science should pause to ask himself the question, Am I ready to be helped in Christian Science? before attempting to comply with the perhaps overzealous solicitation of some friend or acquaintance that he "try" Christian Science. It is often that practitioners receive letters remarkable for their brevity, in one brief sentence conveying the thought that the writers, who are entire strangers to Christian Science, desire immediate help. Such a procedure often works an injustice both to patient and to practitioner.

Definite information concerning what is termed absent treatment in Christian Science is always available, and should be obtained by patients before they decide as to their readiness to receive such treatment. They will very soon ascertain that something more is required of than a brief verbal or written request that help be given them.

The facts in the case are that there is nothing in the realm of religion more exacting than Christian Science treatment, since its mission is to destroy the works of the devil by revealing the kingdom of God. It is too sacred a thing to be thrust upon those unprepared to pay it proper respect. It is not a nauseous medical prescription involving no moral demands on the part of the patient, but it is a call upon individual thinking to "go up higher." Christian Science treatment, in other words, never leaves a mortal in the same mental attitude where it found him. It never leaves him with the same troublesome thoughts which were the foundation of his suffering. Rather does it bring about a lifting-up in obedience to the Scriptural command, "Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts." The Christian Scientist, knowing the demands of Truth, is in a position to define for his patient the requirements for successful healing. The patient is in no position to dictate to Christian Science, much as he might be inclined to do so. Naaman of old thought it easier to follow his own way in procuring his healing; but he finally surrendered to the right way, as outlined by the prophet, and was healed of his leprosy. Had Naaman been ready for the truth he would not have wasted any time in serving his own will.
