I should like to say I have very great cause for gratitude...
I should like to say I have very great cause for gratitude that Christian Science was presented to me about fifteen years ago. While I was reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy for the first time the desire for tobacco left me, and I was permanently freed from this bondage. I should also like to state a few facts in connection with the healing of a surgical case.
About a year ago my little boy, then four years old, fell from the back of a tall chair, landing on his shoulder. The truth as taught in Christian Science was at once declared for him, and in a few minutes he was calmed down and little more was thought of the incident. It was soon noticed, however that the little chap did not use his right hand, but ate his meals and did everything with his left. We then thought we ought to consult a doctor as to the nature of the injury. Accordingly, on a Saturday, two days after the accident, I took the boy to a woman physician in this town. She described the trouble as a bad "green-stick" fracture of the collar bone and said that an X-ray photograph should be taken and that she would also like to consult a surgeon. Appointments were made for both the photograph and the consultation for next morning, Sunday. A practitioner was asked and kindly consented to treat the case mentally.
The next morning the surgeon saw the boy, and after carefully examining the X-ray picture and measuring the length of each collar bone gave it as his opinion that if the arm were strapped in position for a fortninght, and this were followed by a course of massage, the child would regain partial use of his arm and hand, it might be hoped that he would get complete use of it by the time he was fifteen or sixteen years old. Until then, owing to the shortening of the bone, it was unlikely he would be able to raise his elbow. The surgeon was careful to add that he might be criticized for not breaking and resetting the bone.
