In the summer of 1918 Christian Science found me
In the summer of 1918 Christian Science found me. I had always been frail. My mother had passed on with tuberculosis of the lungs, and as I grew older, I manifested this same difficulty in the spine. I went to many doctors, but none understood the trouble. Finally I had an X-ray picture taken, and was told that I had tuberculosis in the spine.
A long struggle followed with varying treatments. At the end of two years I was rapidly losing faith in doctors, but as a last resort I had a plaster cast put on. I wore this for eight months. After three months of constant wear it had to be changed. When the new cast was put on, the doctors told me I was losing rapidly, and that I could not live six months. I came home from the hospital with all courage gone and in more pain than ever. One day I found myself listening to a "still small voice" asking why I did not try Christian Science. A few days later I sent for a practitioner. She came to my house, and in a few words told me that God does not know or send sickness. Then she gave me treatment. That night I slept six hours, the longest I had rested without drugs for over a year. I improved daily, and on the fifth day I walked to the practitioner's house. It was not far,—but it seemed far for me. I told her how I longed to take the cast off. She did not advise me to do so, but said I should not have to keep it on much longer.
As I walked home, I felt free as never before, and after I had been home a short while I decided to remove the cast. I sent my little son to bed, and as soon as he had fallen asleep, declaring the truth continually I began to cut the cast. It took a long time, and when it finally came off I fainted. Even though, as I regained consciousness, I could not move, all fear had left me. I was alone in the house with a little boy three years old; yet I knew there was nothing for me to do but to trust in God. The doors were unlocked, and soon two little girls came in and wanted to sell books. I asked them to call the practitioner. She came immediately, and I told of my removal of the cast. She stayed two hours, and during that time I was able to get my head on the pillow.
