When a friend spoke to me of Christian Science, I was in extreme mental distress, having lost most of what constitutes so-called human happiness. This friend begged me to go with her to a Wednesday evening testimony meeting, and skeptically I accepted, saying that this did not bind me to anything. The next day I went to a practitioner, who explained Christian Science to me, encouraged me kindly, and gave me a treatment. From that day my life was transformed. After a few treatments my thought had completely changed, and also my condition. A very serious heart trouble, from which I had always suffered, has disappeared, as have also minor difficulties and many faults of character.

Among the many blessings received through Christian Science, there are two others which I wish to mention. In Paris three years ago, following a chill, I allowed myself to be controlled by fear and became very ill. The people who were with me called a doctor, who said that he feared pleurisy or pulmonary congestion and ordered an energetic treatment, saying he would return in the evening to make sure. I was not able to move, and suffered a great deal. I had asked a friend to call a Christian Science practitioner, who arrived just as the physician was leaving. I told her that the doctor had been called in spite of my objections, for I had no confidence except in God. I was anxious, as I had an important duty to perform. The practitioner explained patiently that God always gives the necessary strength, and that nothing can prevent us from accomplishing our work. She told me I would surely be able to work in the afternoon, and then treated me. This was on a Sunday. After her departure, while my friend read the Lesson-Sermon to me, I slept peacefully. When the doctor returned I was up. He was very much surprised, and requested those who were there to watch me. But I no longer had any fever, and knew that I was healed.

Last year, while alone in a foreign country, I was deprived of every human support, and found myself in an apparently inextricable and difficult position. I asked for absent treatment from a dear practitioner who had often helped me, and at the end of two weeks my position had completely changed and was improved beyond my expectation. I was freed from disagreeable work, and I had found a situation, family life, and affection. I still have this position, and am more and more contented with it. Several persons who know me have often said that I was particularly fortunate. God alone has brought all this about. As it is written in the sixty-eighth psalm: "God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains."
