[Written for the Sentinel]

Obedience

IT is not always easy to obey,
And tread the path that opens for my feet;
Another path would seem to be
An easier, smoother climb for me,
Enabling me my journey to complete
More quickly; nor so long would seem the day.
Then to myself I say,
He learned obedience,—taking my destined way.

It is not always easy to obey
When duty points away from dear desire;
Self whispers softly to my thought
That pleasant ways can hinder naught
Of onward progress, but avoid the mire,
Thus tempting me from rightful path to stray.
Then steadfastly I plead,
He learned obedience,—and from self am freed.

It is not always easy to obey
When great the task, because my flesh is weak
And shrinks away from certain pain,
Unmindful of the promised gain,
And earnest protest am I moved to speak
That from my lips this cup may pass away.
Then I recall 't was said
He learned obedience,—and am comforted.
