[Written for the Sentinel]

The Christian Science Reading Room

A FRIENDLY little house set by the road,
Not importuning, but with open door,
Where tired pilgrims learn to drop their load,
The while love laves their feet, as once of yore.

A lighthouse, throwing far its kindly ray,
Guiding to harbor many a storm-tossed bark,
In answer to the rover's prayer for home,
The Father's house, the safety of the ark.

Planted throughout the world, inspired of God,
It waits to bless; it lives to cheer and guide.
May longing, hungering hearts the pathway find
Unto that peace, nor e'er be lured aside.

Shine on, brave light! Swing wide, O friendly door,
In answer to the cry of world-sick men,
Till all shall find their peace in Love's great heart,
Needing no other refuge! Give, till then!
