Love Impartial

MANY times in the trial of our faith and spiritual understanding there comes the temptation to judge our progress by those about us; and then thoughts of envy, jealousy, and sometimes hatred, may try to usurp the place of divine Love, and hide it from consciousness. But as our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 13): "Love is impartial and universal in its adaptation and bestowals. It is the open fount which cries, 'Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters.'" Progress Godward, spiritually understood, is growth in grace; and growth continues as the outcome of communion with the one God, Life, Truth, and Love.

The little brooklet, wending its way over the plain and through the forest, is never still, but progresses constantly; and its waters become clearer as they run over the rocks in their course. So, as one wends his way through a seeming forest of adversity, struggling to remain on the straight and narrow path of righteousness, perhaps stumbling at times over past mistakes, but never neglecting to correct and thus overcome these errors, he will come to understand what Mrs. Eddy means when she says (ibid., p. 267), "Thought is borrowed from a higher source than matter, and by reversal, errors serve as waymarks to the one Mind, in which all error disappears in celestial Truth." Thus men become purified by holding steadfastly to the way which, in spite of its ruggedness, leads them away from self.

Because one's life seems filled with turbulence, is unsettled and ofttimes discordant, that does not prove our Father-Mother God less favorable to one of His children than to another, who may seem to be enjoying greater peace. For, do we not have the promise of Isaiah: "Now thus saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour."
