When I was thirteen I was attacked by rheumatic fever,...
When I was thirteen I was attacked by rheumatic fever, valvular heart trouble, and extreme nervousness, which left me lying in bed absolutely helpless, like a baby, unable to walk, talk, or feed myself. Any noise such as that made by the children playing outside or the horses on the street would cause me to scream. I had been six weeks in this condition, and the doctor said I would be in bed for weeks longer. I became so discouraged that even my father's whistling downstairs made me cry. Then The doctor went on his two weeks' vacation, leaving me in charge of a very kind doctor, who carried out his instructions, visiting me about three days a week.
Later my mother told me a Christian Scientist was coming to see me. The lady came quietly into the room, sat down and talked to me for a little while, and then said, "I will give your your first Christian Science treatment." I felt calmer; and during the treatment I thought over what she had just been saying. After she left I felt brighter, and found myself humming over some of the hymns I liked. Within two weeks I was able to walk. First, with the help of the practitioner, I walked to the end of the bed. Soon I took a few steps each day, until I could stand alone. Then one evening I surprised my father by walking along the hall to the next room.
The doctor who had been left in charge, at the end of two weeks examined me, and found me perfectly normal. When he inquired if I was taking my medicine regularly, my mother said that I had not taken it, and did not need it.
