God is Man's Life
Christian Science is doing incalculable good by teaching mankind the entirely spiritual nature of Life. It is destroying the erroneous belief that life originates in and is dependent upon matter by showing that, since Spirit is infinite, matter is unreal; and thus it is proving the truth of Christ Jesus' words, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing." Exactly in the degree that material beliefs are overcome do men gain their freedom, entering upon a fuller life, fuller in the sense of its being healthier, happier, more active, and more useful.
Every one knows how crushing is a material sense of existence. The sick person knows it well. And, verily, it is material sense itself which in belief is crushing him. Perhaps such a one may have come to the point where it seems as if he had reached the limit of endurance, and the temptation is suggesting itself that it would be easier to meet the difficulty if he passed on; for then, whispers the suggestion, he would be freer from the load of materialism which now seems to be hampering his progress! But think of the effect which such a lie must produce if accepted. It would have him make of death a friend instead of the enemy of mankind that it is; and to believe that death is a friend is to invite it, and so to shorten the span of life on earth. Contrariwise, longevity will be increased as death is seen to be an enemy,—indeed, "the last enemy that shall be destroyed," as Paul says,—and combated with all the might of spiritual understanding which can be brought to bear upon the belief.
To counteract the fallacy that death is a friend, one must know something about Life and man's true relation to Life. Here is where Christian Science comes in with its quickening helpfulness; for it declares that God is Life,—infinite Life,—and that man reflects or expresses this infinite Life. Can there ever be a cessation to man's real life then? No! It will go on forever, because infinite Life must be reflected by man eternally. "Life is divine Principle, Mind, Soul, Spirit," writes Mrs. Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 468). "Life is without beginning and without end. Eternity, not time, expresses the thought of Life, and time is no part of eternity."
