Gladness and Gratitude

"It is a comely fashion to be glad!
Joy is the grace we say to God."

In such dear manner has one poet presented the union of gladness and gratitude. Mankind has often sought these sentiments. It has frequently wished it might be grateful, and oftener yet, perhaps, has longed to be glad; but it has not always been aware that these mental qualities, in their truest sense, are quite inseparable. Surely it is as impossible to be really glad and not grateful, as to be honestly grateful and not feel at the same time the joy of spontaneous gladness. Every one has no doubt recognized that when, even in small degree, he has appreciated some good, his heart has been simultaneously gladdened.
