Mrs. Eddy never visited San Jose, and was never in California. Moreover, she did not believe in spiritualism. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the textbook of Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy has devoted an entire chapter to the subject of Christian Science versus Spiritualism, wherein the difference is clearly defined. On page 80 she writes: "I entertain no doubt of the humanity and philanthropy of many Spiritualists, but I cannot coincide with their views. It is mysticism which gives spiritualism its force." And on the following page she further states: "If Spiritualists understood the Science of being, their belief in mediumship would vanish." This is not written in a spirit of controversy, but to avoid the impression that spiritualism teaches anything in common with Christian Science as revealed by Mrs. Eddy.
