When I was fourteen years old I became a member of...
When I was fourteen years old I became a member of a church. I often heard the pastor read, before his Sunday sermon, the words of Christ Jesus as recorded in John's gospel, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." I oftern studied this verse and would ask myself: Are we doing the works which Jesus the Christ did? Why don't we do them, as he commanded us? I also asked the pastors these questions, but did not receive any reply. One evening I asked the wife of a clergyman, and her reply was: "This verse in John is not meant for us. It was intended only for the disciples who were with Jesus." However, I was not satisfied, as the promise was for all who believed on him. I then began to go from one church to another in search of Truth.
I suffered from kidney trouble and constipation, and the medicine prescribed by the physician brought me no relief. I then went to a Christian Science practitioner and asked her to help me if she thought she could. She explained to me what Christian Science is, and asked me not to take any more medicine. I promised I would do this. After one treatment I was healed of the troubles above referred to. I was also healed of many other ailments, among them headaches. I was healed, too, of many wounds, without medicine and without a doctor.
I was accepted as a member of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston, Massachusetts. Through the daily study of the Bible, and of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" and the other works of Mary Baker Eddy, it has become clear to me that Christian Science is the teaching of Christ Jesus.
