Opportunity

How often do we idly wait for something big and grand!
The opportunity we want seems ne'er the one at hand.
We push aside the proffered cup, and only see a cross;
The wondrous draught neglected stands; we see but want and loss.
"I am the way," the Master said, and bravely drained the cup;
Then demonstrated life for all when he was lifted up.
Fear not, the Father's promise reads, I always go before.
When opportunity but knocks, Love opens wide the door.
No task too hard can come to us; we have His promise true;
'T is difficult when we our way instead of His pursue.
'Thy will be done," Christ Jesus said: that we must learn to say;
Then shall we, too, be lifted up, after the Master's way.
Ah, if the lesson Jesus taught, we could more clearly see,
An opportunity divine, the cup would prove to be;
And it would hold each time for us naught but a draught of love,
An inspiration Spiritward, eternal Life to prove.
