Plain Dealer
Christian Science does not deny that sin appears to be a reality in human experience. Rather does it recognize that a long and relentless warfare must be waged against sin in all its guises before mankind is redeemed from this, its worst of foes. Christian Science teaches, even as does the Bible, that all sin is of the flesh, and that as we grow in spirituality, sin loses its power to influence or deceive us. In the same sense that the Saviour came to the world to save men from sickness and sin, Christian Science has for its mission the redemption of the world from these false beliefs. We understand in Christian Science that sin is not of God; that it is no part of His creation; and in this sense do Christian Scientists understand that sin is not real. That only is real which God made, and what He made is as eternal as He is eternal.
While Christian Science has already made for itself a reputation because of its efficacy in healing all forms of physical disease, this healing work is really considered by Christian Scientists as of small import in comparison with the immense task of healing sin, which must be destroyed if we are to realize eventually our God-given dominion over all forms of error. In her Message to The Mother Church for 1901 (p. 13) Mrs. Eddy states: "Christian Science lays the axe at the root of sin, and destroys it on the very basis of nothingness. When man makes something of sin it is either because he fears it or loves it. Now, destroy the conception of sin as something, a reality, and you destroy the fear and the love of it; and sin disappears."
