In the latter part of the year 1915 I had what the world calls a terrible accident: a leaden bullet, discharged from a thirty-eight caliber gun, passed through my body close to the heart. The physician and surgeon told me later that if my heart had been expanded instead of being contracted at the time, the bullet would have passed directly through the heart. As it was, he said I had one chance in thousands to live. My mother and sister had received, during many years, much help from Christian Science, and upon being notified of my accident telephoned to a Christian Science practitioner, who gave what help she could under the circumstances. Within three months I had two very severe operations performed at the hospital. Then, after I had been taken to my mother's home, a distance of about twenty-five miles, and undergone two more operations, the surgeon began to make preparations to remove me to a hospital in Cincinnati. From the material or human point of view I seemed to be no better.
By this time I had commenced to think for myself, and to thank God for my life and for what Christian Science was doing for me. So I decided I would depend entirely upon God and Christian Science in place of the doctors and medicine. From that moment I began to improve rapidly, and in a short time I was able to make the trip back to my home in Dayton. I then took treatment from a practitioner in Dayton; and I am here to-day to tell the story.
About four years ago I opened a store, and have attended to my business almost every day with the help of my dear wife, who is with me in Science. We have never in all these years taken any material remedies, but have depended wholly upon God for our help in every way. We are very greatful indeed for the kind physicians, for they worked faithfully and were most conscientious. When I meet them now, they declare, "It is a miracle that you are still here." Most of all do I thank God. I am also grateful to our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, and to the kind practitioners, as well as to my dear wife and all my friends for their loving help. And now I want to know more about this grand truth.
