Signs of the Times

[From the Christian Advocate, San Francisco, Calif., Jan. 17, 1924]

Paul Arthur Schilpp writes that any man who does not apply his reasoning faculty (which is just as much God's gift to him as any other faculty) to his religion can never be the best kind of Christian... It appears almost impossible to live the completest Christian life without having made the philosophy of it one's own. In other words, to be the best kind of Christian one must be a thinking Christian, one who need not be ashamed of the confidence that is within him.... Renewed research is bound to help men more and more to see the really fundamental values of Christianity, and thus it will aid materially in making Christianity truly Christian in the sense of making it more nearly according to the intent and mind of the Master himself.... Thus through it all the kingdom of God may be built, and we may help to hasten the answer to the Christian prayer: "Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven."
