The Uncovering and Destruction of Error

MARY BAKER EDDY, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in "No and Yes" (p. 24), "The claims of evil become both less and more in Christian Science, than in human philosophies or creeds; more, because the evil that is hidden by dogma and human reason is uncovered by Science; and less, because evil, being thus uncovered, is found out, and exposure is nine points of destruction." The student of Christian Science, endeavoring to make practical his understanding of Truth in the destruction of any belief of evil,—be it poverty, sin, sickness, or sorrow,—can sooner reduce the false belief to its native nothingness by first exposing, or uncovering, the error which to human sense is the cause of the trouble.

Several years ago the writer had an experience which taught him a valuable lesson, a lesson that has helped in the solving of the problems of subsequent years. A position was obtained in a financial institution, and though it was a minor position, the salary received was reasonable for the services demanded; and he entered the new work with a feeling of gratitude, and a strong desire to work up to higher stations. As he had some understanding of Christian Science, he endeavored to use it in his work, in order that he might gain a better sense of supply and a higher position. Month after month, however, went by and his duties remained practically the same; and to his regret no increase was made in his salary.

After a year and a half, changes were made, and the young student supposed he would then take a step higher; but, to his dismay, a stranger came in and occupied the place. The beliefs of resentment and injustice were met and mastered, error being seen to be only a lie. Another year followed, with added responsibilities and more work to do; but still no increase in pay. Then something occurred: the student began a thorough mental diagnosis. He remembered with joy the words of Christ Jesus, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." As the searchlight of Truth was turned within, he realized what he had been doing. Instead of knowing that God is the Giver of "every good gift and every perfect gift," and is therefore the source of supply, he had been looking to the corporation for which he worked as the source of supply. He saw clearly that if he held to the thought that the abundance of God could reach him in only one way, he was indeed limiting himself by indulging in a wrong and very limited concept of God. After this uncovering came, and the wrong thought was displaced by the right idea, his work was adjusted and another position with reasonable compensation offered to him, and accepted. Thus the problem was satisfactorily solved.
