Paul insists that the old man (material sense, the sensual view of things) shall be put off, and that the new man—the spiritual sense of life, "which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness—shall be put on. One cannot know the true man unless he knows God; and he can know God by mentally, spiritually, discerning good,—by seeing the God-qualities expressed by those with whom he is associated. Jesus said, "This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." This knowledge of God and man and the Christ does not come through material contact or touch. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 481) Mrs. Eddy writes: "Material sense never helps mortals to understand Spirit, God. Through spiritual sense only, man comprehends and loves Deity."
No one will deny that to the human sense of things there is an aspect of man and life that seems very material; it is a mortal, mutable one; it is the sense or view that Job had and emphasized when he said: "Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not." This false material concept of existence gives place to spiritual understanding as one gains and brings into his life and thought the right sense of God and man and the Christ. He is then "a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." Surely the process by which one becomes acquainted with the real self and the Christ and the true God, and thus works out his salvation, is not through sensory nerves and ganglia and brain; rather is it through divine Mind, God, and the manifestations of Mind. The happy, saved man—led into righteousness, not through material touch or feeling, but through truth and love—finds delight in "the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night."
