We read in Jeremiah, "Ye shall seek me, and find me,...
We read in Jeremiah, "Ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart." Almost fifteen years ago Christian Science came to me. A friend and I were sitting on the river bank fishing one afternoon in June, and my friend became a fisher of men; for after I had told her all my woes,—and they were many,—she asked why I did not try Christian Science, assuring me that it would heal everything. She invited me to come to her home on the next Monday afternoon to hear more about it. As my need was very great, I did not care through what channel the healing came, if it only came; and so, though Christian Science seemed to me something to be shunned, the invitation was accepted.
So my search began. I was a nervous and physical wreck, with chronic indigestion and rheumatism; irritable, and not fit to live with. The nights, instead of being restful, were periods of restlessness and distress; for the pain always seemed greater then, and whatever I ate distressed me. I was also an infidel, not believing in God; never caring to own, much less to read, the Bible, though I had heard many good men of different denominations read it and preach about it. A Bible and a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, were borrowed, and I began to search with all my heart; and I found God, the God who is Love, who is always present to heal and save. From the beginning of my reading, lotions and remedies, which before had seemed absolutely necessary, were given up, because forgotten. All my thoughts about God and the universe, including man, had undergone a great change, and there was no room in my consciousness for anything but this beautiful and practical religion, which teaches of that Love which, as Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 494), "always has met and always will meet every human need." My healing came quickly, though I did not know when. I realized after two or three weeks of faithful study that it was a long time since I had had a painful or sleepless night, and that I was eating whatever I pleased without fear. This healing has been permanent. I have also been healed of bladder trouble with occasional help from practitioners, and of many so-called minor ills, such as colds, cuts, and burns.
Our daughter, when a young child, was healed of chronic bronchitis. A physician had said that we must take her away, as a radical change of climate might benefit her; but after my healing through Christian Science, we learned that the change was not necessary. She has had no remedy but the truth since then, except that a physician was in attendance at the birth of her own little one, in compliance with the laws of the state. No material remedies were used, however, for her or for the baby; and she was not troubled with any of the discomforts that generally come to newborn babies and their mothers.
