News-Herald
I am glad to state to your readers, in reply to an inquiry from a clergyman, that the supplies sent to Japan by the Christian Scientists were "for the sick, the diseased, the suffering." It may only have been a cup of cold water, but they were assuredly given in Christ's name. We are taught in Christian Science how to help our fellow-men in whatever condition we may chance to find them. The Golden Rule is our guide in Christian conduct: "As ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise." A Christian Scientist never condemns other religions or other religionists.
In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, states (p. 460): "Sickness is neither imaginary nor unreal,—that is, to the frightened, false sense of the patient. Sickness is more than fancy; it is solid conviction. It is therefore to be dealt with through right apprehension of the truth of being." It was because of his understanding of the truth of being that Jesus was able to heal sickness and sin. He used the selfsame process in healing both of these conditions. He plainly taught that good cannot produce evil; and he proved by his works that sin and sickness were errors which he could and did destroy. He promised that his followers should do the works that he was able to do; and, thanks to Mrs. Eddy's patient, tireless efforts in giving Christian Science to the world, thousands of her followers all over the world are being enabled to follow the commands of the Master. Mrs. Eddy went to the Holy Scriptures for all she has ever taught on the subject of Christian Science. The Bible was her sole textbook. Of her solitary research after discovering Christian Science she writes in the Christian Science textbook (p. 109): "For three years after my discovery, I sought the solution of this problem of Mind-healing, searched the Scriptures and read little else, kept aloof from society, and devoted time and energies to discovering a positive rule. The search was sweet, calm, and buoyant with hope, not selfish nor depressing. I knew the Principle of all harmonious Mind-action to be God, and that cures were produced in primitive Christian healing by holy, uplifting faith; but I must know the Science of this healing, and I won my way to absolute conclusions through divine revelation, reason, and demonstration."
Permit me confidently to state that Christian Science, in actual practice, can and does heal what are termed organic diseases as readily as it cures functional or nervous difficulties. If critics understood Christian Science well enough to be able really to test its healing efficacy, they would see that there is nothing in Christian Science to criticize or condemn. After all, it is the sermons our lives preach that are really worth while; and we shall all go on doing the good we know, in our several ways, until eventually John's vision of the new heaven and the new earth spoken of in Revelation will become an actuality in the lives and experience of all working Christians.
