True Values

Men frequently go widely astray in purpose and action because of the failure properly to estimate values. Because they do not measure things by a proper standard, they are often betrayed into fictitious conclusions. They are tempted to overrate that which is worthless and to underrate the really valuable. Their time is wasted in considering what is of no consequence; while questions and things of real moment are neglected.

Surely, no wise thinker would spend precious moments in giving attention to that which is paltry and false, to what is but ephemeral and transitory in cause and effect, when he may lay hold of reality and continually gain thereby a firmer, surer grasp of all that is worth while! There is nothing of such tremendous value to each individual as the demonstration of his own unity with God, good. Every motive, desire, purpose, should be to this end. Nothing should be allowed to turn one aside for an instant from this aim.

There are few things of greater importance to the Christian Scientist, in the carrying out of this endeavor, than to gain the ability to divide between what should be passed by unnoticed and that to which attention should be given. There is little doubt that the demonstration of Christian Science is often hindered by the failure to spend one's time in the consideration only of the valuable. It is scarcely necessary to say every Christian Scientist believes only that has real value which belongs to God, divine Mind. They all know that spiritual understanding always separates true and false thinking. In spite of this they are still tempted to estimate values from the material arguments of so-called mortal mind rather than from the spiritual thoughts of divine Mind. How frequently do they find themselves in consequence failing to differentiate between right and wrong thinking!
