In order to escape religious and racial persecution, we...
In order to escape religious and racial persecution, we left Russia in the latter part of 1906 and came to America, the land of the free, where each individual is protected by the Constitution of the United States and has the privilege of working out his own salvation according to the dictates of his conscience. Here in America the atmosphere of freedom and broad-mindedness became apparent to me, and I rejoiced exceedingly.
Several years later, I was seized with a very serious disease. Each succeeding year my misery increased, culminating in what the doctors diagnosed as a complication of diseases. My kind parents spent a small fortune in the effort to restore me to health; but materia medica, osteopathy, and a famous water resort failed me; and so I was abandoned as hopeless and incurable.
Christian Science then came to my attention. A copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was placed in my hands, and I was requested to read it. I was told that the mere reading of that book could result in healing. I shall never forget the joy, peace, hope, and encouragement that came into my life. The teachings of that remarkable book were so logical, practical, and beautiful, that I was simply unable to resist them. The logical elucidation of our great and loving Master's teachings healed me instantaneously of the fear of the cross and hatred of the Christ. But oh, how bitter was the realization that I was one of that race which persecuted Christ Jesus so mercilessly. A sense of remorse came over me. I wept bitterly. I realized that his mission was misunderstood by my brethren. The question then presented itself, What must I do to repay him for the great good he has brought to poor suffering humanity? It did not take me long to realize that the only way I could repay him was not to worship his personality, but to strive to keep his commandments and imitate in some degree his mighty works. Did he not say, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also"? In other words, he that understands the spiritual idea of Truth and Love will be able to make those same demonstrations.
