To the Christian Scientist, Mind is God, the governing Principle of all, or, as defined in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, "not that which is in man, but the divine Principle, or God, of whom man is the full and perfect expression" (p. 591). Man is governed by Mind or God, because man is, according to the Bible, created in the image and likeness of God and must be governed by his creator.
The difference between the Mind which is God and that which is commonly known as the carnal mind, dependent upon brain and matter, was clearly pointed out by Paul when he said that the carnal mind, or "mind of the flesh," according to the Revised Version, is death, "for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be." The manifestations of this human or carnal mind include what is commonly known as hypnotism, mesmerism, autosuggestion, and the like. These are the very opposites of Christian Science, for the reasons given by Paul; that is, because the so-called human mind is not subject to the law of God and indeed cannot be, because matter cannot belong to Spirit or be governed by spiritual law. And in the proportion that mankind realizes the omnipotence of the Mind which is God, and the consequent powerlessness of the human counterfeit, which in belief attempts to exercise dominion, will the liberty of the sons of God be demonstrated. As Mrs. Eddy puts it on page 395 of Science and Health: "When divine Science overcomes faith in a carnal mind, and faith in God destroys all faith in sin and in material methods of healing, then sin, disease, and death will disappear."
