In September, 1918, when Christian Science was first...
In September, 1918, when Christian Science was first presented to me, I was very near the "valley of the shadow." I had been suffering for more than two years from a goiter and all the attending ailments. I had dropsy and leakage of the heart, so that for more than two months I could not walk a step alone; and the only manner in which I could rest was sitting in a chair. It was necessary that I be fanned at all times. Five doctors had finally told my family there was no hope for me,—that death would occur in a very short time. On the above date my daughter called the last of the doctors who attended me, and he told her it would do no good for him to come, as he could do no more for me.
That evening I asked for some Christian Science Sentinels which a friend had sent me a few days before, but which I had not felt interested in. I know now the wish to read them was the answer to my prayers to God for relief from my terrible suffering. The testimonies of healing interested me; and the thought came to me that if all those people had been cured by the truth, why should not I? My family having been persuaded to call a practitioner, treatment was taken up one week after I started to read the literature. One Wednesday she came; and I shall never forget with what loving-kindness she explained the blessed truth to me. I was indeed as one "athirst in the desert" (Science and Health, p. 570), for I had lost all faith in material means.
The day following the second treatment I was able to arise from my chair and walk into the next room unassisted. From that day on I gained steadily. The dropsy and heart trouble were not long in leaving me, together with many minor ailments. In a few months my health was so much improved that I had no further treatment for the goiter; but I continued to study daily, often reading well into the night. In less than three years the growth was entirely removed. I have since been examined by two doctors who knew of my condition before the healing; and they both admit I am completely healed, that there is no symptom of the trouble remaining.
