One day last summer, during my daily study, my attention...
One day last summer, during my daily study, my attention was particularly drawn to the verse, "In him we live, and move, and have our being." Many times this verse had been pondered; but now a sense of the absolute security of God's children resulted. This clearer vision of the inseparability of God and man, Love and Love's idea, remained constantly in thought for several days.
Shortly after this a friend and I set out one evening, accompanied by my youngest child in a chair, for a quiet walk along the country lane by my home. This lane ran parallel with the railroad, and hearing what I took to be an express train coming, I looked back. A motor car was overtaking us, so I moved closer to the side of the road, my friend going off the road on to the grassy margin. When passing at a great speed the powerful car swerved, took the wheel off the child's chair, crumpled it up like paper, and hurled it across the road, throwing the child and me on to our faces.
No fear was experienced by any of us. The child was picked up, and quickly reassured with the words, "We are not hurt, and we know why we are not hurt; 'we live, and move, and have our being' in divine Love." By the time the occupants of the car had pulled up and returned, we were all calm in the assurance of well-being. An opportunity was afforded to speak the truth and witness to God's care and protection. This testimony had a very sobering effect upon those in charge of the car, and the kindliest consideration and care were shown on their part. Great surprise was shown that there were no injuries, and anxious inquiries were made some days later; but beyond a slight scratch neither the child nor I suffered in any way either then or afterwards.
