It is about seven years since Christian Science came to...
It is about seven years since Christian Science came to my knowledge and brought about such a transformation in my life. I had been most unhappy for many years. Several doctors were tried, all differing as to what ailed me. I went to an institute and had a consultation. The case was pronounced sugar diabetes. The doctors said that for the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars they could cure me, by teaching me how to eat. I declined.
I saw I must find out for myself if there were any means of relief besides materia medica. One day I went to the druggist where I had been having my prescriptions filled, and asked him if he knew of any books I could get to read to find out something about man. He then asked me why I did not try Christian Science. I told him I did not know anything about it, except that it was a religion, and asked him if Christian Scientists cured sick people. He said he knew they did; and added that this was against his business, but he had known me for a long time and did not like to see me suffer.
I went right from there to a Christian Science practitioner's office and told him my story; and I shall never forget the kind look on his face. He asked me what I wanted to be treated for, and I told him that I had figured it out to be mental depression. I also told him what the doctors had said. He gave me one treatment, and told me to go and eat all I wanted. He also told me to go to work if I wanted to; and I did not lose another day on account of sickness. He asked me if I would read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and go to the church services. This was promised, and fulfilled with much joy. The textbook was read through in about ten days; then the practitioner was seen again and told that the book had been finished. He told me to go and read it again. The next time it was not finished so soon. The first time of reading there was one twenty-hour session of continuous reading. I did not even stop for meals, there was such a hunger for spiritual food. About a month after taking up the study of Christian Science I got a cinder in the left eye. It was in the eye four days. I was determined not to go to a doctor, as I had always done before, but to trust all to God. So the textbook was taken, and I read it for about four hours with one eye. The cinder then came out, and I could see out of that eye as well as the other.
