The Peacemaker
For years much has been said and written relative to the subject of peace. The World War was fought, it was believed, to "make the world safe for democracy;" but democracy seems still in peril. The world is seemingly as restless and troubled as ever, and stands in great need of genuine peace. From this crying need, the thought of peacemaking—what to do in order to secure peace—has become active. The word "peacemaking" is fraught with deep meaning; and in Christian Science we learn that the true spiritual sense of peacemaking is dependent upon a condition of thought which understands divine Principle and does not stand for personality.
This peacemaking condition of thought is attained only as we surrender our mortal sense, will, and self-interest to righteousness, or to the divine will. The Psalmist saith, "Righteousness and peace have kissed each other." What is it to surrender our so-called will and self-interest to the divine will? How is this spiritual state of consciousness to be reached? In order to surrender we must be willing not only to give up, but to cast out and destroy all erroneous thoughts which we may have housed within our consciousness, thoughts such as fear, envy, greed, jealousy, malice, hatred, and resentment because some one has injured or tried to injure us. When we thus cease our wrong way of thinking and so cleanse our mental home, what happens? Error has been dethroned, and is proved powerless. As, one by one, wrong or false thoughts are destroyed in our mentality, other thoughts, pure and holy, born of Truth and Love, enter, until our mental home, cleansed and purified, has become a sacred place, and is indeed made a holy habitation for the Most High. No erroneous or false beliefs shall enter therein, if it be strongly garrisoned with the sentinels of Truth, Life, and Love. Then we are at peace.
If all warring nations would begin to cleanse their mentalities of evil, warring thoughts, which tend towards outward discord and strife, and begin to think thoughts which make for peace and harmony, what a world-wide realization of peace would follow!
