In July, 1917, I joined two friends, purposing to spend an eight weeks' holiday on foot in Derbyshire. Within a short while it became evident that it was difficult and painful for me to do what the others did; and it was suggested that I should see a doctor. Heart trouble, with complications, was the diagnosis; and the request was made that I should rest in bed one month. I readily acquiesced, so strangely ill did I seem. Four months passed, and I was still in bed, in the same locality; and the worst was feared.
At this juncture, early in December, a Christian Science friend announced her intention of coming for one night. The nurse asked the doctor's permission, and a short interview was sanctioned. My visitor briefly and lovingly proposed that I should try Christian Science treatment, and I gave assent. The mere suggestion brought a ray of hope and light into utter darkness. Straightway she returned to her city and arranged with a practitioner, who kindly consented to take the case. Absent treatment was begun at once; and the benefit began too! The joy of five hours' consecutive sleep was the first boon, soon followed by normal action. Extreme fear grew less; and in three weeks I took an awkward railway journey north. I entered a Christian Science home, and was accessible to the practitioner. Eleven weeks of loving personal care from my friend and her household, with visits and patient help from the practitioner, followed. A brother then came for me; and he and his wife were amazed at the change, having last seen me in late November on what had seemed likely to be my deathbed. I took the journey with him, quite normally, to his east coast home.
Then came long, weary months of battling with error. During the first week of my stay by the sea, we were subjected to a Zeppelin raid. My understanding of Truth was insufficient, and a serious relapse followed. My brother expressed the wish that his trusted medical man should examine me and furnish the certificate due to be sent to my college authorities. His doctor was kind and courteous, but firm in his opinion that I should resign at once. To my brother he confirmed other medical opinion, to the effect that I should never work again.
