It is about fourteen years since Christian Science was first offered to me in behalf of my little daughter, two years of age, who was in the hospital suffering from typhoid fever. The doctors gave me no hope for her recovery, stating that the bowels were badly ulcerated.

An appointment was made with a practitioner by the friend who had spoken to me of Christian Science. I knew nothing of this teaching, but did so want to have my little daughter get well that I was willing to try anything. I went to see the practitioner, but told her that if it required faith on my part I need not take up her time, as I did not believe in God. I gave the report of the baby's condition as given at the hospital, and after I had spent a few minutes in her presence she dismissed me and said to let her hear from me again. The next day the baby seemed to be worse. The doctors could do nothing, so I decided to take the child home. The doctors and nurse wanted to know if I realized I took her life in my hands if she were moved, also that I should have to assume the responsibility, as it was doubtful if I could reach home with her alive. A cab was called, and the baby was put on a pillow—a mere skeleton. I went from the hospital to the practitioner, who then accompanied me to my home, a drive of nine miles. I had been warned by the doctors not to give the child water to drink unless it had been boiled, and nothing but ice cream to eat; but when she cried for a drink, the practitioner said to give it to her and not to fear.

The following day the child ate a hearty lunch, and some hours later began to cry. I tried to call the practitioner, but, getting no response, I telephoned to a physician. He was not in his office, however, at the time. I therefore called the practitioner again, and told her what I had done. She asked me if I wanted medical aid or Christian Science. I said I wanted Christian Science. She hung up the receiver; and in less than ten minutes the child was asleep. In about twenty minutes the doctor came, and I took him into the room where the child was. He took her temperature, examined her, and found her normal. He said, "I 'll tell you where the trouble is: you are afraid." In talking to the practitioner the next day, I asked her what she thought the doctor said. Her answer was, "I don't know that he said; but this I do know,—I declared the truth for that child. I knew she was hidden 'in the secret place of the most High ... under the shadow of the Almighty.'" How the flood tides of truth and love did flow! I was filled with thoughts like this: "The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life." I was healed instantaneously of organic heart trouble, and had a glorious spiritual uplift the first day I went to the practitioner's home. For this spiritual awakening I am most grateful.
