The message of Christian Science is one of hope, joy, and blessedness, of health, harmony, and immortality, here and now. It is the message of the Founder of Christianity: "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls." Many of those who are Christian Scientists to-day became such, not because they wanted to, but because they had to. Among them will be found business men, university men, solicitors, doctors, bankers, tradesmen and artisans, and many gentle, devout women, thus effectually disposing of the statement that they are illiterate, unlearned, emotional, or temperamental. The time has passed when a Christian Scientist was a rarity. We have Scientists among our acquaintances, and we know them to be decent citizens of good repute. We know of invalids who are now well, and of others who are now cheerful, going about with a smile instead of a grouch. There are too many of them for it to be said that they are all mistaken. So what is Christian Science? We cannot do better than turn to Mrs. Eddy's writings, and see how she, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has defined it. We find that on page 1 of "Rudimental Divine Science" she defines it "as the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony." If students of Christian Science are finding in it harmony,—if, having taken Jesus' yoke upon them, they are finding rest unto their souls,—they are unlikely to be perturbed when, perhaps, their former minister attempts to prove to his own satisfaction that the teaching is unscientific and unchristian. They have learned better; for they know that the Bible is more to them than it ever was, that they can now understand it and apply it to all their needs, and that they have an exact knowledge of all things.
