The Christian Scientist's medicine is the truth, which Jesus said "shall make you free." The first definition of medicine, according to Webster, is "the science and art dealing with the prevention, cure, or alleviation of disease." The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, in an address at Pleasant View, Concord, New Hampshire, before over two thousand members of The Mother Church in 1887, said (Miscellaneous Writings, pp. 251, 252): "Truth is the tonic for the sick. ... Herein the mental medicine of divine metaphysics and the medical systems of allopathy and homœopathy differ. Mental medicine gains no potency by attenuation, and its largest dose is never dangerous, but the more the better in every case."
