Harmony and Peace

What burdens humanity bears! And the majority of men, it is safe to say, see no way of having them removed. Burdens seem to press upon many of them almost unceasingly with their unfeeling, unrelenting weight, crushing out hope and enslaving them. What are these burdens? They are the errors of material sense. Christian Science has laid bare the fact; and at the same time has shown mankind how material sense can be counteracted, the burdens removed, and harmony and peace take their place. But even those who know more than a little of the truth which Christian Science reveals, still bear a considerable load; for they have not yet anything like entirely overcome material sense, which, in belief, persists in giving them their problems and difficulties, gives rise to sickness, and tempts to sin. It is well to recognize clearly the seeming cause of humanity's burdens. If one refuse to do so, he is omitting to take the first step towards the solution of his own and the world's problems.

Now while Christian Science shows that material sense is the source of all human suffering and sorrow, it also gives the remedy. Christian Science has revealed God in such an intelligible way that no one sincerely disposed to gaining a knowledge of Truth can fail to do so. The Christian Scientist can say with John, that God is with him; that God dwells with him; that God not only is able to, but actually does, heal his diseases, and wipe away his tears. He can truthfully declare in John's own words: "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes." The burdens can be removed; God can remove them.

What, then, is the process whereby humanity may rise from under its load? It is entirely one of spiritual understanding. Every individual must gain this understanding, if he would be free. Each must learn the truth about God and spiritual reality for himself; and for himself apply his knowledge to the solution of whatever phase of materiality may be causing the burden which he bears. It is spiritual understanding that enables him to utilize the "power of Truth," which Mrs. Eddy, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 495), says is "a power which opens the prison doors to such as are bound, and sets the captive free physically and morally." And what a wondrous power is the power of Truth! It is unlimited, since God is infinite. How to obtain this understanding of Truth is what is taught by Christian Science in the Christian Science textbook and throughout all of Mrs. Eddy's other writings.
