The Sunlight of Joy

Mrs. Eddy writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 236): "Parents should teach their children at the earliest possible period the truths of health and holiness. Children are more tractable than adults, and learn more readily to love the simple verities that will make them happy and good." As parents are obedient to these instructions they are quickly repaid in the child's manifest receptivity to good; and the seeds of Truth and Love thus early sown in the child's thought soon sprout and become swift messengers of healing.

Who, in close association with these little ones, has not often felt the Christly touch of love, and many times experienced complete healing through their pure and simple faith expressed in childlike terms? The following incident brought home such a beautiful lesson that it is passed on, hoping it may bring to others the inspiration it brought the writer.

It was a dark, rainy morning, one of many we had been having, and five-year-old Bobby was manifesting a great deal of restlessness at being obliged to remain indoors with no playmate. His face plainly expressed the thoughts which were being entertained; and he was therefore asked if he thought any one would care to play with him when he had such a cross face to look at. He was also reminded of the comfortable home which was sheltering him from the rain, and of the many books and toys love had provided for just days as these. The words seemed to make an impression, and the little one went out on the back porch and began playing by himself. Soon he was fully engaged and singing at the top of his voice.
