The Lectures

Adelaide, South Australia (Society).—The following prefatory remarks were made by G. P. Marrie at a Christian Science lecture by Frank H. Leonard:—

The rapid spread of Christian Science since its discovery less than sixty years ago shows how wisely, how surely, and how faithfully its Discoverer, Mary Baker Eddy, founded her teachings on the Rock, Truth. Its wonderful progress justifies the assertion that its teachings will ultimately establish the true brotherhood of man—that brotherhood which can come only of the understanding that God created all, and that therefore all men are equal in His sight. In this connection I cannot do better than quote our beloved Leader's words from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where she says on page 340: "One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations; constitutes the brotherhood of man; ends wars; fulfils the Scripture, 'Love thy neighbor as thyself;' annihilates pagan and Christian idolatry,—whatever is wrong in social, civil, criminal, political, and religious codes; equalizes the sexes; annuls the curse on man, and leaves nothing that can sin, suffer, be punished or destroyed."

Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada (First Church).— Introducing Judge Frederick C. Hill, a Christian Science lecturer, to his audience, John A. C. Fraser spoke as follows:—

You will recollect that no less a teacher than Christ Jesus declared, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life;" and his whole life was a complete demonstration of this fundamental teaching of the Christian life. When he helped a sinner out of his sin, he did not then turn to matter to heal his sickness. His practice was purely spiritual, in healing both sickness and sin. He asked the religious people of his day, "Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk;" and then he gave the answer himself by healing the paralytic man with the Word of Truth.

Christian Science is asking the same question of the people of to-day; and is answering it in the same way, exemplified for us by Christ Jesus. It calls to every one to forsake material ways and means, to give up the arts and devices of the human mind in their search for health and happiness; and to accept the pure, Christly healing of the divine Mind. If we accept the call, we, too, shall learn to understand Christian healing and how to practice it; we, too, shall understand how to be well through pure and holy living. We shall understand how to be happy through the love of God, good, exercised in daily thoughtful, unselfish, loving consideration for those around us.

Bend, Ore. (First Church).—Introducing William W. Porter, a Christian Science lecturer, to his audience, Mrs. Harriet D. Gant said in part:—

Impelled by her love for humanity, Mrs. Eddy consecrated her life to the work of giving to the world her discovery, Christian Science, so that all may apply it in a practical way to the problems which present themselves daily. That she succeeded is proved by the lives and testimonies of thousands of people throughout the whole world. Christian Science has brought peace and harmony into my life, where before there was discord and suffering. Through the knowledge gained of Christian Science in the Christian Science Sunday School, and with the help of a few treatments by a

Christian Science practitioner, a member of my family was healed of a so-called incurable spinal disease. Instead of being an invalid all his life, as the physicians said he would be, he is now like other young men of his age, attending high school, and able, both mentally and physically, to participate in its activities.

Edinburgh, Scotland (First Church).—Introducing Miss Lucia C. Coulson, a Christian Science lecturer, to her audience, James Johnston said in part:—

In the book of Job we read, "Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat;" and the world to-day is still echoing Job's cry. As we grasp a little knowledge of the truth, through the understanding of Christian Science, we can also say as did Job, "I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee." Christian Science has been my only guide and protector for a considerable number of years, and during those years it has never failed me. It has also shown me how to help others, to obey the Golden Rule, and to love my neighbor as myself.

Cheyenne, Wyo. (First Church).—Introducing Charles I. Ohrenstein, a Christian Science lecturer, to his audience, Osmer E. Smith said in part:—

It is generally admitted by thinking people that some power created the universe. That power seems to be beyond human imagination and conception, yet all men admit its infinity and its eternality; and to-day, more than ever before, there is an increasing desire to know more about it,—to return to the spiritual, to a complete reliance upon God. Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," states that God is good, that God is divine Love, that man is corrected and governed by divine law, and that there is no power apart from God. God's law is the law of love, and it means good to those who receive it understandingly. Only those who are willing to allow this law to control every situation receive the full measure of benefit therefrom.

Birmingham, Ala. (First Church).—Introducing Miss Margaret M. Glenn, a Christian Science lecturer, to her audience, Dr. William M. Marsh said in part:—

Christian Scientists accept without qualification or reservation the statement that God is omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent Being; and they use this great verity, not as an idealistic theory, but as a practical, available truth to meet every need and condition that confronts humanity. And now in accordance with Christ Jesus' immortal words, when he reassuringly said, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also," we see the sick healed, the sorrowing comforted, and the sinner loosed from the bondage of sin. Thus Christian Scientists prove the Scriptural statement that "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."

Chillicothe, Ohio (First Church).—Introducing Dr. Walton Hubbard, a Christian Science lecturer, to his audience, John D. Ritter spoke as follows:—

Christian Science, as a religion of love, extends to you an invitation in the words of the Master, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." It will not fail, for it is based on the pure fountain of eternal Truth. "Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters." We who have been healed in Christian Science, we who have practiced Christian Science in the healing of others, know from experience, observation, and demonstration, that when the divine Principle of Christian Science is honestly, intelligently, and scientifically applied, it will not fail. It cannot fail, because it is the immutable law of God. It is prayer in its highest and truest sense. It is "God with us," a positive, spiritual knowing, which excludes all doubt, uncertainty, or lack of faith.
