Church Business Meetings
In times of seeming chemicalization, when the argument of "many minds" is doing its best to make confusion and animosity appear real, the student of Christian Science may win for himself great calmness and clarity of vision by considering metaphysically the three words, "church," "business," and "meeting." That is, he may ask and scientifically answer the question, What is a church business meeting?
Every Christian Scientist rejoices to begin his consideration of the word "church" with the definition given by Mrs. Eddy on page 583 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." In studying this definition with reference to church business meetings, one student found the words "utility" and "demonstration" standing out conspicuously. The passage containing them reads: "The Church is that institution, which affords proof of its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick." To begin to apprehend this definition with sufficient clearness to demonstrate it, even in a degree, one has to realize that the church "which affords proof of its utility" by rousing mankind "to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science," is the most practical institution on earth.
But, some one may say, if the Church as depicted is a possibility wherever I may be, why should I go to this or that business meeting? There is so apt to be a conflict of opinions, and I'll likely come away from it disturbed and confused. Would n't it be better for me to stay quietly at home with my books?
