Christian Science is based entirely on the understanding...

Times of India

Christian Science is based entirely on the understanding of God's omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence, and follows the preaching and practice of Jesus the Christ, who made these great truths about God practical. Jesus also gave the promise, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." A great multitude to-day express their gratitude for what Christian Science has brought to them; and it is a fact, much commented upon by observers, that this gratitude is almost always greater for moral and spiritual help and for a better understanding of God than it is even for the wonderful physical healings that have been received. The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, whose writings are leading so many earnest seekers to an understanding of the great spiritual truths of the Bible and how they meet every need of humanity when correctly and honestly applied, explains clearly and emphatically in many places the absolutely opposite natures of Christian Science and suggestion. Christian Science is based on God, good, as the only power, as opposed to suggestion, which presupposes good and evil powers operating in so-called human minds. Those who have actually used Christian Science, and proved by results their understanding, in some degree, of its teachings, likewise emphasize this difference.

The inability to conceive of any power higher than the human mind, "that holds within itself all evil" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 97), as Mrs. Eddy so clearly describes it, should make one silent before the operation of God's law. As Paul says, "The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." It is interesting to remember that when faced with the facts of the demonstration of the power of God by Jesus the Christ, some, not being able to comprehend a good power ruling out evil, accused the Master of casting out devils by Beelzebub, the prince of devils. Jesus' refutation still holds good against any attempt to identify the power of God, omnipotent good, with the false claim that power resides in the so-called human mind—a false claim which is exposed and overcome by Christian Science. Our Master said, "Ye shall know them by their fruits;" and Christian Science is willing that all should be judged by this standard of the good brought to humanity.
