"The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light." In deep gratitude to all who so lovingly guided my feeble footsteps out of darkness, and with the hope that it may encourage others who are seeking the light, I submit my testimony.

I did not come to Christian Science for healing. In the autumn of 1911 a member of the family called for help in Christian Science. Not knowing the facts about Christian Science healing, I strongly opposed this step, having been a student of materia medica. My opposition was overruled and a practitioner called. When my opposition was mentioned to the practitioner, she lovingly said that nothing would be said to me about Christian Science.

After several visits, the practitioner asked me to read some Bible references to the dear one who had asked for help. Since it has always been my desire to be helpful to all mankind, I gladly did so, but was quite surprised, as the Bible had never been mentioned to me in connection with Christian Science. My prejudice was destroyed when it was explained that Christian Science was founded entirely on the Bible. The patient, who had been carried upstairs for nine months, soon manifested marked improvement, and in three weeks was able to visit the practitioner.

Still the subject of metaphysical healing did not interest me particularly. Early that winter I attended my first Christian Science service. The Bible reading was the twenty-third psalm. It was read with so much love and understanding, that a great light began to dawn in my consciousness. After that Sunday morning I had no desire for any other church service (I was then a member of another church), and began earnestly to study the Bible Lessons as given in the Christian Science Quarterly. I did not seem to make much progress at first, as the old medical laws, the hospital, and operating-room experiences had darkened my sense of God's omnipotence; but the desire to learn was there, and as our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 2), "The desire which goes forth hungering after righteousness is blessed of our Father, and it does not return unto us void." One day, while reading the Lesson, I found this message from I Corinthians: "That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God." I was so grateful for this gleam of light. I saw that I must put my faith in the power of God, and not in the wisdom of men, which is "foolishness with God," as the Scriptures say. Notwithstanding this helpful message, the arguments of the so-called laws governing this mortal body were very persistent, and the darkness still overhung me; I could not seem to get away from the old teaching. One morning, the words of our Master came to me so clearly that it seemed as if some one had spoken to me aloud: "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life." Words cannot express the joy and assurance that came to me. These two messages proved to be the foundation stones upon which I was to build.

During these ten years divine Love has been my only physician. Physical difficulties have been overcome, and much more quickly than under medical treatment, proving the statement in Hebrews that God's Word "is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword." I am grateful for the spiritual unfoldment in my consciousness,—grateful to God for His loving care and protection; grateful to our Master, Christ Jesus, who said, "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me;" grateful for our dear Leader's unselfishness in sharing with all the world the "pearl of grate price" which she discovered.
